PHNOM PENH, April 9, 2024 – The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has expressed admiration for Cambodia’s significant role in promoting intellectual property (IP) rights within the nation and across the region, contributing to economic, social, and cultural development.

This commendation was conveyed by Daren Tang, Director General of WIPO, during a meeting with Cham Nimul, Cambodia's Minister of Commerce, at the WIPO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland on May 7.

Tang praised Cambodia's effective marketing strategies for potential geographical indication (GI) products, including Kampot Pepper, Kampot Kep Salt, Mondulkiri Wild Honey, and their attractive packaging, which has elevated these products to premium status.

The WIPO Director General also invited Cambodia to engage in several IP-related projects lasting 8 to 12 months, which are part of WIPO’s special projects aimed at trade promotion through intellectual property.

Minister Cham Nimul highlighted the critical role of IP in enhancing trade, fostering new businesses, supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), encouraging foreign direct investment (FDIs), and promoting innovation, research, and development through technological transfer.

Furthermore, the Minister requested WIPO's assistance in amending trademark laws, implementing national IP policies, and spreading awareness of IP benefits among farmer associations, business groups, and university students.

She also extended gratitude to WIPO for its ongoing support since Cambodia joined the organization in 1995.
